Never Standing Still

Today I wanted to share something with you…

An ‘aha moment’ that my better half prompted over the weekend.

See, over the break we travelled up to the Midlands. My wife’s parents live near Birmingham, so we visited in the break so my baby daughter’s grandparents could get some baby time.

Naturally on the 3 hour journey up the M40 the conversation flows back and forth on a variety of subjects from New Year plans to topics in the media, and the latest news from our friends.

Then suddenly out of the blue my wife says…

“Your company is so drastically different from when we first met”.

Granted it has been nearly 8 brilliant years and I was a little surprised where it came from, but she wasn’t wrong…

As I reflected, she was absolutely right.

The products we sell, the staff we employ, even the business model we now adopt for any new venture are completely different from when I started in business 16 years ago, let alone 8 years ago.

And that’s when it hit me. Our success had been because we never stood still.

We pivoted!

When we saw the marketplace change, we pivoted.

When a product no longer sold as well, we pivoted.

And when a business no longer provided the income or lifestyle we wanted, you guessed it… we pivoted.

And I see this as a problem for many entrepreneurs and business owners.

They get stuck.

They are too attached to their business as ‘the thing they do’, rather than it being the platform to launch whatever project they want success in.

They forget they have control and they forget to pivot.

You’ve seen it recently with the big name brands who have gone into administration.

They got stuck doing what wasn’t working and they couldn’t see any other possible way.

That’s frustrating and dangerous and it never ends well, because the business world is always changing.

If your and need help identifying where and how to pivot let me know. I do it many times a year for my customers, not to mention my own businesses. We can get on a quick call and take a look together.

That’s all from me today.
